Simplifying complex, cross-border connectivity challenges in Africa

One of the world’s largest telcos came to WIOCC with a challenge: to improve the resilience of its network and increase uptime by delivering a 40Gbps link across six southern Africa countries, configured as two connectivity rings. The ability to capitalise on WIOCC’s unique shareholder networks and strong working relationships, meant that our team was able to deliver a seamless solution perfectly tailored to meet the client’s requirements.

Hitesh Desai, WIOCC Director Sales – Southern Africa, explained: “We take pride in our ability to establish mutually-beneficial partnerships with stakeholders, and in this instance, we leveraged three of our shareholders’ networks. We worked with BoFiNet in Botswana to deliver a link from Kazungula to our Metro PoP in Johannesburg; TelOne extended this link to Kariba on the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe; and Tmcel routed a third link from our Johannesburg PoP to Zobue, at the border of Mozambique and Malawi, through Maputo.”

By increasing network resilience and thereby improving their service availability in the region, we helped our client take full advantage of the opportunities arising from the increasing demand for mobile data, content and connectivity – which have risen further since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

As well as developing a bespoke technical solution, we also made things simple for our client by providing:

  • one point of contact for solution design, billing, technical assistance and account management
  • easy-to-upgrade connectivity on WIOCC’s and its shareholders’ networks
  • efficient service delivery across multiple countries, enabled by our strong relationships
