Senior Network Architect

Department: Engineering
Reporting Line: Engineering Manager (or appointed designee)

Job Objective: As part of the Engineering team, the Senior Network Architect will plan, design, select technologies & equipment, implement and make required changes to the optical transport core network within budget and timelines ensuring the correct level of quality and performance to enable customer services, maintain satisfaction and revenue while meeting or improving company targets. To be acknowledged as 4th level technical competence relating to the network.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • 24/7 4th level technical interface, escalation/on-call
  • Network architect, policy, and security
  • Network inventory management
  • Network procurement/equipment contract management
  • DWDM/ROADM channel planning
  • Manage and develop optical supervisory channels
  • Manage and develop operational support systems and tools
  • Optical budget planning & management of the fibre/DWDM/ROADM network
  • Adhere to, lead compliance with, and assist in developing company policies and procedures
  • Assist other departments, lead and report on projects as requested
  • Ensure network design aligns with NetSuite as appropriate
  • Deputise for Network Architect as directed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent, Masters is preferred) in a technical field

Experience & Skills:

  • Requires a minimum of 6 years of technical experience in the telecom industry with at least 3 years in network engineering, a network design role or equivalent
  • Knowledge and experience of fibre networks, ROADM, DWDM, OTN, alien wave, SDH
  • Knowledge in supporting transmission and switching equipment i.e. Mikrotik, Juniper, Tejas networks, etc.
  • Experience in network monitoring tools e.g. Cacti, MRTG, PRTG, NPM, etc.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills evidenced by work history and accomplishments
  • Excellent communications and soft skills, including the ability to listen to and concisely summarize key information to share with customers
  • Must use B/OSS tools effectively to record information accurately and concisely in a timely manner
  • Demonstrate ability to manage multiple priorities and solve problems in a fast-paced environment
  • In-depth understanding of OSNR/G-OSNR, Q factor, attenuation, OTDR, optical power budgets
  • Understanding and knowledge of the NLD and TFR networks in South Africa
