NMC Engineer (Four Positions) – South Africa

Job Objective

 

Proactively manage WIOCC’s Global Network (subsea & terrestrial) to meet quality and performance levels, resolve incidents and problems and network administration for the SLTE network.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
  • Proactive management of the subsea and terrestrial optical network, resolve incidents and problems, improve performance objectives, manage DCN security and environmental systems
  • Operate & utilise Wet Plant supervisory systems in applying fault isolation techniques and standard diagnostic procedures to isolate and resolve equipment and circuit problems
  • Coordinate the turn-up, integration & upgrades of SLTE while ensuring proper functioning of the Wet Plant supervisory systems
  • Manage and build strong partnerships with CLS / DC Engineers, Cable System Owners, Cable System Suppliers and SLTE Vendors
  • Coordinate together with the CLS / DC staff, daily, weekly and monthly routine maintenance procedures on Rectifiers, Batteries, GENSET and the status of calibration of optical test equipment
  • SLTE Network Administration and SLTE DCN monitoring & maintenance
  • Technical planning of Planned Engineering Works and management through Change Management
  • Develop systems & tools to automate real-time monitoring of optical network performance metrics for network performance management
  • Network release; accept new and changed network from Engineering through Projects
  • Mentorship & training of the Operations team on technical competency
  • Adhere to, lead compliance with, and assist in developing company policies and procedures
  • Collaborate with other departments and lead and report on projects as requested by the Project Office
  • Proactively contribute to Network Operations’ documentation & process automation as these evolve to align with clients’ SLAs
  • Provide Tier-III core network support to NOC, TAC & OATS Clients’ networks and lead SLTE & transport network equipment vendor escalations
  • Use B/OSS tools effectively to record information accurately and concisely in a timely manner
  • Provide NOC Disaster Recovery capability
Minimum Qualifications 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical / Electronics / Communications Engineering or extensive work experience in a related field
  • Technical achievements in any or a combination of Optical Networking, Subsea cable systems and IP Networking
Experience & Skills:
  • Requires a minimum of 3 years’ technical experience in the telecom industry, including experience as NMC / NOC / TAC Engineer, managing SLTE network and/or terrestrial DWDM transport network
  • Extensive experience with Network Management Systems for optical network & IP network e.g., Huawei U2000, Infinera TNMS, Ciena MCP, ASN SN10, Tejas NMS/EMS, Cacti, PRTG etc.
  • Technical experience in O&M of optical transmission equipment from leading vendors, e.g., Infinera, Ciena, Huawei, ADVA, Tejas, etc.
  • Experience with optical test equipment (OSA, OTDR, BERT, C-OTDR), optical network KPIS (OSNR, Q-Factor) and photonic layer management (C-Band spectrum)
  • Knowledge of DCN operations, management & network security
  • Knowledge of DWDM / SDH / OTN / Data (Ethernet, IP/MPLS) communications protocols
  • Knowledge of subsea repair operations, procedures and proactive monitoring of cable routes
  • Ability to collaborate with multiple vendors & stakeholders and, articulate & present key information through Technical Report Writing
  • Expert knowledge of at least one trouble ticket system; NetSuite is desirable
  • Demonstrate ability to manage multiple priorities and solve problems in a fast-paced environment involving live customer traffic & maintenance windows
